Expert Tips on Removing Wallpaper

Wallpaper is an excellent way to add color and character to your interior. When the colors start to fade or the design starts to look a little dated, you may want to replace it to update the look of the space. Removing wallpaper, however, is not an easy task. To achieve professional-looking results, Handyman Connection® of Eden Prairie suggests these tips:

Determine the Type

“Strippable” wallpaper is much easier to remove. Start by prying up an edge with a utility knife. Tug gently, and pull down at an angle while keeping both hands near the lifting edge. If the wallpaper comes off easily and peels in one long sheet, your job will be a one-step operation. Repeat the process until you have removed all the sheets, and then you can clean up any adhesive residue.

Soften the Paste

If your wallpaper isn’t the “strippable” kind, you need to soften the wallpaper paste. Combine a bucket of warm water, some liquid detergent and a handful of cellulose paste, and apply the solution to your wallpaper. We recommend leaving it on for at least five minutes to give the solution enough time to soak into the wallpaper. Afterward, carefully lift the paper off with a scraper. For washable or wipeable wallpaper, you can score its surface first with an old dinner fork to let the water penetrate.

Consider Chemicals

You won’t be able to remove wallpaper that has been covered with paint using a water solution. Instead, use a chemical stripper that’s designed for textured coatings. Just make sure you wear the proper protective gear. Fabric softener is also a great alternative. Simply stir one capful of softener into one liter of water, and sponge the solution onto your walls. Let soak for at least 20 minutes, and then scrape the wallpaper off. If it has a water-resistant coating, you can use a wire-bristle brush to score it before treating it with the solution.

With the right tools, you can easily remove your current wallpaper. For more professional results, however, turn to Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie.
