Home Improvement / November 8, 2017
Stucco, commonly known as “popcorn ceiling”, used to be prominent back in the 1950s. However, it didn’t age as well as other design trends during that time. They’re difficult to repair, hard to clean and easily attract dust. Handyman Connection® of South Shore discusses how to deal with stucco ceiling for a better-looking interior.
The Scrape Method
This method is probably the easiest. To do this, all you need is a 4-inch drywall or utility knife to chip away the popcorn texture and smooth out the surface. Once you’re done chipping the surface away, you may have to skim the surface with a thin layer of joint compound to smooth out the imperfections.
This method is advisable if your property is relatively new. For older properties, you may have to have it tested for asbestos or lead paint. If they test positive, then don’t use the scrape method.
Covering the Drywall
This is the ideal method if scraping the stucco surface is out of the question. All you need to do is affix a ceiling-grade gypsum board onto the surface of the existing popcorn ceiling. It’s as easy as securing the wall into the framing and covering the old surface.
Skimming a New Coat
This is another method you can try if scraping the old popcorn surface can’t be done. This method involves cleaning and prepping the existing substrate with a quick-set drywall mud. Apply it as you would with a bonding agent, and then simply apply the finishing compound with your trusted trowel or knife to create your new texture.
