Home Improvement / February 1, 2018
It’s always a happy sight when you see your baby start crawling around. Once they reach their first year, you’ll start to see just how adventurous they really are! Unfortunately, your home may not be a completely safe space for your baby.
In this post, Handyman Connection® of South Shore discusses what should be in your babyproofing checklist.
Plug Electric Outlets
Babies have curious hands, and they love putting them in places they shouldn’t, such as the electric outlets. A simple way to reduce the dangers of an open electric outlet is simply plugging it. We don’t mean with a cord either, but with a plastic safety plug. Alternatively, you can hide the outlets along with the electrical cords behind furniture or with a hide-a-cord device.
Secure the Stairs
The last thing you want is for your adventurous toddler making their way to the staircase. Unfortunately, you may not always be there to keep an eye out for your tot. We recommend securing your staircase and other extremities with a grille and baby gate.
If you have a fireplace, that’s another place where you should install a grill to keep your inquisitive toddler safe from accidental burns. We also recommend stowing matches, fireplace tools and logs in a place out of reach.
Keep Dangerous Items Locked Up
The snoopy toddler will start to fiddle around with locked cabinets that they can reach, and through some stroke of luck, they might manage to open these. The last thing you want is for them to have their way with deadly items, such as chemicals and sharp objects. Keep them locked and secure. Alternatively, you may want to store them elsewhere, preferably in a shelf or cabinet that’s too far or too high for them to reach.
