Water softeners work by taking out the extra magnesium and calcium ions in water by using an exchange involving potassium or sodium ions. After this exchange, excess ions are flushed out, making way for recharging with new sodium ions. The process can use around 25 gallons of water a day so it’s important to be really sure you need a water softener.
Here are some of the signs you do:
1. You Have Scale Buildup on Appliances and Within Pipes
Scale, or limescale, is a hard, chalky substance made of magnesium carbonate and calcium. Mineral deposits can form on coffee pots and tea kettles, as well as your plumbing, which can get clogged up when the buildup grows too large.
2. Your Hair and Skin Are Dry
There’s only so much that shampoo and soap can do to counteract hard water. High levels of magnesium and calcium salts in your bath water can cause dry hair and skin. Instead of nourishing your skin and hair, hard water simply dries them out. Worse, it will leave residue that leads to blocked pores, more irritation and more inflammation.
3. You Always Need Plumbing Repair
Scale buildup around valves can mean valves won’t close completely, resulting into water leaks. When leaks occur around appliances, they can reduce the lifespan of washing machines and dishwashers. Frequently calling in a plumber is expensive and water leaks can cause extra damage to your home so you’re better off softening your water instead to avoid the scale buildup altogether.
